SL Council Approves Pigeon Poisoning Proposal

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Call it “The Pigeon Problem”.

Downtown Spirit Lake is swarmed daily by hundreds of the dirty birds who seem to be feeding at the local elevator and then roosting on buildings near the Hill Avenue and Lake Street intersection.

The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday voted to enter into a contract with Presto Pest Control to eradicate the interlopers. Presto servicemen Scott Egertson says poisoned corn kernals will be put on downtown roofs to bait the birds. He says the dying birds will put off a “distress signal” to other birds warning them not to roost in that area.

Egertson says residents should not be concerned about other animals being accidentally poisoned.

The service will cost the city 28-hundred dollars. Even though it wasn’t budgeted, Spirit Lake council members feel diseased pigeons and exrement on downtown sidewalks are public health hazards that need to be fixed. They say they’ll find the money elsewhere in the budget.
