SL Council Approves Building Permit For Diner

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake City Council Tuesday unanimously approved a building permit for a 50’s style diner. The “Deja Blues Diner” will be located in a business park just east of Hy-Vee.

The council approved the permit after granting a special exception. The action was needed because the building’s stainless steel exterior won’t meet the city’s architectural standards for buildings in highway commercial areas. Council member Pat McNorton said the special exception is appropriate in this case because of the theme of the business.

The council also approved a revised development agreement for Southern Hills Village…a modular housing development going in on the city’s south side. The developer will no longer be required to build a central storm shelter. Instead, buyers will be given the option for individual shelters.

Developer August Shepman also assured the council the manufactured homes will comply with zoning standards and state building code. Based on that, the council also approved the final plat of the development…pending a review of covenants by Public Works Director Todd Dolphin.
