SL Council Adopts Zoning Ordinance Changes/Approves Annexations

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council Tuesday unanimously adopted a couple of changes to the city’s zoning ordinance. One deletes a provision allowing medical or dental clinics as a special exception use in areas zoned multi-family residential. The other pertains to when variances may be granted. The council adopted the revisions following a public hearing that drew no opposition.

In other business, the council approved amendments to the city’s electrical code. Paul Hughes, the city’s Code Enforcement Officer, says the present code will be replaced with the 2005 version.

The council also signed off on several voluntary annexation proposals. They include nearly 11 acres of land near Matuska Taxidermy; 74 acres of land owned by August Shepman south of Hawn Road; and the Okoboji Lobster and Wine Company/Newman’s Cakes and Crustaceans site west of Highway 71 just south of the current city limits. The proposed annexations must still be approved by the City Development Board in Des Moines.

The council set December 13th as the date to take bids on the new water tower and for utility and street projects in the Southern Hills Subdivision, Country Acres Estates, 30th Street and 41st Street.

They also approved the placement of a street light at the corner of Hawn Road and Erie Avenue; and voted four-to-one to approve an employment contract for Police Chief Jeff Hanson. Council member Barb Ricke cast the lone no vote, siting concern a severance package.
