(Spirit Lake)– High gas and diesel prices are putting the squeeze on schools and the new school year gets underway.
The Spirit Lake School District just went through a very painful round of budget cuts. Now, Superintendent Tim Grieves isn’t ruling out the possibility of even more cuts thanks to skyrocketing gas and diesel prices. Grieves says there’s no doubt they’ll have to increase their transportation budget. Grieves says ironically, due to budget cuts last year, the Spirit Lake School District made cuts in transportation for field trips and some sporting events. Grieves says those cuts will probably be negated by the higher fuel costs for transportation the district is committed to providing.
Grieves doesn’t have exact numbers yet as to just exactly how the higher fuel prices will impact the district.
Schools throughout the region are facing a similar scenario.
