(Spirit Lake)– With the home heating season about to kick into high gear comes a reminder for those who qualify to sign up for assistance through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance, or LIHEAP program.
Applications are currently being accepted for the elderly and disabled at local human service agency offices, including Upper Des Moines Opportunity locally. All other households can apply beginning November 1st.
The program provides supplemental assistance based on household income, household size, type of dwelling and type of heating fuel, among others. The program is NOT designed to pay a household’s TOTAL energy costs.
Households that are over the LIHEAP regular income guidelines may be eligible for LIHEAP benefits through the medical waiver component. The medical expenses must be documented, paid and non-reimbursable.
Anyone who has already applied and been approved for this upcoming heating season cannot re-apply.
For guidelines and to make an appointment, contact your local office of Upper Des Moines Opportunity. The number for the Spirit Lake office is 336-1112. The office is located on the southeast side of the Great Lakes Mall.
