Sheriff: No Vehicles To Be Allowed On West Lake Okoboji During Winter Games

November 23, 2014

(Arnolds Park)– Organizers of this year’s University of Okoboji Iowa Great Lakes Winter Games announced last Friday most of the events are being moved from Smith’s Bay to near the State Pier in front of the Arnolds Park Amusement Park and green space just east of the park.

Authorities say while the ice is much safer there than Smith’s Bay, that there still isn’t enough to support the weight of hundreds of vehicles that typically park on the lake during the winter games. As a result, they’re urging people to keep all vehicles off the ice. And, Dickinson County Sheriff Greg Baloun says if they have to, law enforcement officers will be stationed at the various lake accesses this weekend to keep vehicles off.

The forecast is complicating matters. Temperatures in the 40’s and maybe even 50’s are expected most of the week.
