(Spencer)– It was a frustrating day Monday for local businesses and residents that depend on the telephone or internet.
Officials with Qwest Communications say a contractor working on the Highway 71 resurfacing project just north of Spencer accidentally cut a fiber optics cable around 10:00 a.m. Monday. It took crews nearly seven hours to get it fixed. Service was restored to most affected areas shortly before 5:00 p.m.
Not only did the outage affect long distance, cellular and most internet service, but even more importantly it knocked out 911 service to most of Dickinson county. Back-up numbers had to be established.
Fortunately, authorities say there were no emergencies during the outage.
