Severe Thunderstorms Pummel Lakes With Hail; Dump Torrential Rain

November 22, 2014

(Arnolds Park)– Severe thunderstorms late Wednesday afternoon brought badly needed rain to the Iowa Great Lakes. But they also brought something we didn’t need–hail.

Hail ranging in size from three quarters of-an-inch up to an inch in diameter pummeled portions of Dickinson county. There were several reports of three quarter inch hail in the Milford area and a report on one inch hail in Arnolds Park. All those reports were received around 5:20 p.m. Hail nearly an inch in diameter pummeled Lake Park and Superior.

The storms also produced torrential downpours that caused street flooding in Arnolds Park. Water was reportedly several feet deep in places on Highway 71.

.56 of rain fell at the KUOO studios. But amounts were much higher elsewhere. Some areas picked up as much as two inches of rain in less than a half-hour.

Heavy thunderstorms and the potential of severe weather is in the forecast into early next week.
