Severe Storms Leave Destruction In Nobles & Jackson Counties

November 22, 2014

(Lakefield, Mn.)– The buzz of chainsaws is a common sound late this (Tues.) afternoon in Jackson and Nobles counties.

Severe thunderstorms packing winds of 60 to 100 miles-per-hour roared through those areas early this afternoon, leaving a path of destruction behind them.

Power lines were torn down, trees uprooted, and in some cases, vehicles were even blown over.

In Worthington, an overturned semi tractor-trailer blocked both lanes of Interstate 90. A bicycle bridge near Lake Okabena was destroyed.

Trevor Anderson of the Lakefield Police Department tells KUOO news damage in that town is extensive. He says there were numerous trees and powerlines down, and power was still out to some homes yet as of late this (Tues.) afternoon.

Anderson estimates the wind blew in excess of 100 miles-per-hour when the storm went through Lakefield around 1:30 p.m. He says there was also some street flooding.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported.

In the Iowa Great Lakes, wind gusted to 35 miles-per-hour here at the KUOO studios. A 43 mile-per-hour gust was clocked at Vick’s Corner.

The storm dumped about seven tenths of-an-inch of rain on the Iowa Great Lakes. There were also reports of small hail in some areas.
