(Cylinder)– A Gilmore City was seriously injured Tuesday when a semi and a feed trailer it was pulling missed a curve and rolled.
The Palo Alto County Sheriff’s Office says Curt Nielsen was northbound on Highway 18 when he failed to negotiate a curve on the north side of Cylinder. The semi traveled off the north side of the highway and overturned onto the passenger side. It then slid into a bridge and guard rail on the north side of the highway.
Nielsen was transported by ambulance to the Palo Alto County Hospital and was transferred to another hospital. No information was available on the nature of his injuries or condition.
Highway 18 was closed down in that area for about four and-a-half hours while crews vacuumed up the feed that spilled from the trailer which was then uprighted and removed.
D.O.T crwes inspected the bridge and cut back some guard rail that was encroaching the roadway. The Cylinder Fire Department then washed the remaining particulants off the highway.
The semi and trailer, owned by C.I.P Transports of Algona, sustained an estimated $50,000 in damage; damage to the bridge was estimated at about $5,000.
Authorities say the crash took place around 4:30 a.m.
The Palo Alto County Sheriff Reserves, Emmetsburg and Cylinder Fire Departments, Iowa State Patrol, Palo Alto County Emergency Management, Palo Alto County Ambulance Service and the Iowa Department of Transportation Road Maintenance Division assisted on the scene.
