Semi Collides With Unhooked Trailer

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– No injuries were reported Friday in a freak accident on Highway 18 in Clay county.

The Sheriff’s Office says 35-year-old James Benedix of Ruthven was driving a 1996 International tractor and trailer when he collided with a homemade trailer that came unhooked from a 1998 Chevrolet truck driven by 23-year-old Bradley Gross of Luverne, Iowa.

Deputies say Benedix swerved to try to avoid the collision, but struck it with the right side tires. The trailer wound up in the east ditch.

$500 in damage was estimated to the trailer Gross was pulling; the semi driven by Benedix sustained $1,000 in damage.

No injuries were reported to either driver.

Gross was cited for operation without registration on the trailer and pulling an unsafe vehicle.

The incident took place shortly before 4:30 p.m.
