(Orleans)– The search for a young man who was on a boat that capsized Thursday on Big Spirit Lake resumed this (Friday) morning.
He’s identified as 19-year-old Charles Richard Peterson of Bennington, Nebraska…which is near Omaha. Names of the other two people that were on the boat haven’t been released. They were rescued by a fisherman who found them clinging to a lifejacket. It isn’t certain how long they were in the water before they were rescued, but officials say it could have been as long as two hours. Peterson swam back to the upside-down boat…that’s the last he was seen.
The 12-foot narrow, flat-bottomed boat went down in high wind and waves Thursday morning off of the Marble Beach Campground. Rescue crews were called to the scene around 10:50 a.m.
Authorities say none of the three were wearing life jackets at the time of the incident, although there were atleast two on board–the one the two clung until they were rescued and another that was found in the boat when it was recovered.
Authorities say high wind and waves hampered Thursday’s search operations.
