Sandbar Beach Rezoning Issue Postponed

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A public hearing on a rezoning request and consideration of a preliminary plat for a proposed development on the northeast side of Big Spirit Lake scheduled for today’s (Mon.) meeting of the Dickinson County Planning and Zoning Commission has been taken off the agenda.

David Kolhaase, the county’s Planning and Zoning Administrator, says the landowners, Don and Nancy Yarnes, requested the agenda item be postponed. No reason was given, and it isn’t known when the issue will come before the commission.

The issue has drawn opposition from environmentalists who say the proposed development would destroy the last remaining bed of bulrushes in the Iowa Great Lakes. The aquatic plant is known for its ability to protect and improve water quality. The Yarnes’ say the proposed project has been carefully engineered so as not to have a negative impact on the bulrushes.
