Residents Call For DHS Investigation

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– It’s been a little more than two years since the tragic death of Shelby Duis. The death of the two-year-old Spirit Lake toddler resulted in a huge public outcry that the Iowa Department of Human Services wasn’t doing enough to protect children. Now, a group of citizens says the agency has gone too far in the other direction.

About 50 people concerned over policies the D-H-S uses in placing children in foster care attended a meeting Wednesday evening in Spirit Lake. They feel that in many instances, children are being unfairly removed from their homes.

The session was organized by Sheryl McKevit of Spirit Lake who said they’ll be sending a transcript of the meeting along with a petition calling for an investigation to the Governor.
