Regents Speak Out On Technology Development

November 22, 2014

(Ottumwa)– The Board of Regents wants the state to develop a formal policy that turns technology developed at Iowa’s three public universities into opportunities for economic development.

Several regents say Iowa often fails to take advantage of technology that could aid the state’s economy.

Their comments came after a presentation in Ottumwa Tuesday on a hearing improvement device developed by a University of Iowa professor.

Regent Tom Bedell of Spirit Lake says companies seeking to market technology based in Iowa should be required to have some kind of presence in the state.

Bedell says the regents should write such a policy collaborating with the three universities, lawmakers and state economic development leaders.

Regents President Michael Gartner of Des Moines says the issue is too important for the future of Iowa for each of those entities to have different strategies.
