Recent Storms Ease Subsoil Moisture Shortage

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– What started out as a serious shortage of subsoil moisture earlier this fall has turned around thanks to recent rain and snow storms.

Paul Kassel, Crops Specialist with the Iowa State University Extension Service, says soil profiles in Spirit Lake earlier this fall contained less than half the moisture than usual. He says the three inches-plus of moisture we’ve received over the past week couldn’t have come at a better time. Kassel says it all soaked into the ground…which is still unfrozen.
