(Spirit Lake)– Construction of the new Dickinson county courthouse includes a plaza in front of the building that will contain a veteran’s memorial. John Tonsfeldt of the Dickinson County Veteran’s Affairs Office says a committee that’s planning the memorial is asking for the public’s assistance in providing names of Dickinson county residents who joined the U.S. Military and died while on active duty. Tonsfeldt says the new monument will contain the name and date of death for all county residents between the founding of the county in the late 1850’s to date.
Anyone with names to submit should contact Tonsfeldt at 336-0883. Tonsfeldt says for each name they would like to have as much information as possible concerning their background, family, activities, sports, hobbies and the like so their stories can be told and retold for decades to come.
Tonsfeldt says even though construction of the Veteran’s Memorial Plaza won’t get underway until the second phase of the courthouse project, they want to have the names collected by October. He says work will then get underway on engraving the memorial.
The Veteran’s Memorial Plaza will be located on the northeast side of the new courthouse, around the tower replica that will also be built as part of the project.
