(Arnolds Park)– The unseasonably warm weather has taken it’s toll on ice conditions in the Iowa Great Lakes. And officials say conditions may get worse with even warmer temperatures in the forecast next week.
It’s resulting in some major changes for this year’s University of Okoboji Winter Games. Officials with the Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce announced Thursday this year’s activities are being moved to East Lake Okoboji…where conditions are somewhat better but still far from ideal.
Participants are being told not to drive vehicles onto the ice.
Abby Larson, Co-Chair of this year’s Winter Games, says there will also be a slight change in this year’s bonfire, to be held Saturday evening, January 28th. While the bonfire will still be held in the green space area at Arnolds Park, Larson says it’s being shifted farther south toward Broadway Avenue. She says the move is being made to create a safety zone as this year’s fireworks display will be shot from the lakeshore instead of on the lake.
The Winter Games Committee will be meeting again at 5:30 p.m. Monday (Jan. 23rd).
The University of Okoboji Winter Games will be held January 27th through the 29th.
