Pony Express Riders Injured

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A boy was taken to the hospital when he and his father fell off a horse during Friday’s Pony Express ride in Spirit Lake.

Police Captain Larry Moorehead says the incident took place as the riders were crossing Peoria Avenue and Highways nine and 71. Moorehead says something spooked the horse, causing it to rear up…throwing off 48-year-old Rex Guthrie and his six-year-old son Joel. Both are from Milford. Rex Guthrie was checked over at the scene. Joel was taken by ambulance to Dickinson County Memorial Hospital where he was treated and released.

The incident took place around 12:30 p.m. Friday.

The Pony Express ride in Dickinson county took in almost 4,500-dollars for Camp Sunnyside near Des Moines.
