(Undated)–The filing period for candidates wishing to run for school boards in Iowa opened Monday. In Spirit lake, 1st term incumbant Cliff Garvey says he’s running for re-election, and wants to serve until the current construction projects at the high school are complete.
Garvey tells KUOO News the financial pinch Iowa school districts are feeling has been the biggest challenge as a board member.
Garvey’s at-large seat is the only one up for election in Spirit Lake this fall.
In Okoboji there are two at-large school board seats up for election. Two term incumbant Mark Fisher says he will NOT run again.
Fisher says serving on the Okoboj board has been a positive experience and hopes several candidates will come forward.
Tom Clary’s term also expires this fall in the Okoboji school district. He tells KUOO News it’s time for someone with children still in school to come forward. It’s Clary’s second time on a schoolboard, having served 20 years ago too.
Clary hopes his legacy to the Okoboji district was bringing a business-like mindset to the board.
In Harris-Lake Park director district number 3 Gary Johnson is up for re-election and in director district number 5 Stan Anderson’s term is up.
In Graettinger/Terril the seats held currently by Duane Hoffman and Roger Schmitt are up.
Estherville-Lincoln Central voters will elect three school board members in September. Don Schiltz’s term is up, the term to which Gary Feddern was elected also expires in September. Feddern resigned last week and Mike Karls was appointed to fill it. And there will be a special election to fill the remainder of a school board term left when Dale McDunnough resigned. It is being filled by Molly Anderson in the interim.
In the Armstrong-Ringsted district the district one seat held by Lisa McDonnell and the at-large position held by Gregg Boom are up for election.
In Spencer, the at-large positions held by Sue Harmon and Scott DeGeest are up this fall.
In Emmetsburg at-large members Jeff Morey and Thomas Stillman have terms ending.
And there are two two at-large seats open in Ruthven-Ayrshire, currently filled by Dave Forey and Raylynn Sanculi (san-KU-lee).
The deadline for filing nomination papers to seek schoolboard is Friday August 4th. School board election day in Iowa this year is Tuesday, September 13th.
