Parking Restrictions Proposed For Downtown Spirit Lake

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake city council is considering some parking restrictions in the downtown area.

Mayor Eric Nielsen also serves on the city’s Betterment Committee, which is recommending the council adopt an ordinance establishing a two-hour parking limitation in the downtown area during the business day.

Nielsen, who operates a dentist’s office in downtown Spirit Lake, says he’s been fielding more and more complaints about people parking vehicles for extended periods of time on downtown streets.

Nielsen says the parking restrictions are being proposed for Lake Street between Gary and Jackson Avenues; Hill Avenue between 15th and 18th Streets and Ithaca Avenue between 16th and 18th Streets.

Nielsen admits enforcing the ordinance may be a bit of challenge for police. He says it would be largely up to business owners to report offenders.

The city council Tuesday directed City Attorney Earl Maahs to write up a proposed ordinance that will be presented for consideration at their next meeting.
