(Milford)– The Okoboji school board voted five-to-nothing Monday to award the low bid of 3,678,000-dollars to the Hazelhoff Construction firm of Cherokee for the new gym to be constructed to the south of the existing high school in Milford. The architect’s estimate was 3,741,000-dollars. Hazelhoff is currently doing the expansion project at the Okoboji Elementary School.
The action to award the bid followed comments from Don Hemphill, an attorney representing Don Brinkley, a neighbor who’s opposed to the site of the new gym. He once again asked the board to consider a site west of the existing building instead of to the south, siting concerns over traffic, parking and other issues.
Hemphill added it would be wrong for the board to award the bid when a zoning issue on the proposed site hasn’t been taken care of yet.
But board member Mark Fisher referred to a letter the district received from city officials dated February 18th that indicated zoning compliance shouldn’t be a problem.
