(Okoboji)– The city of Okoboji is looking into the feasibility of contracting out its garbage collection service.
Okoboji, like several other lakes area cities, operates its own garbage hauling business. But City Administrator Dennis Daly says the city faces some major expenses in the near future if it’s going to continue doing that. He says the current garbage truck needs to be replaced and upsized and an additional employee needs to be hired to keep up with the additional work.
By contracting the service out, Daly says the city wouldn’t have to hire another person as the existing employees would be freed up to do other tasks, such as street maintenance.
The Okoboji City Council Tuesday directed Daly to get some costs on contracting and report back.
