(Superior)– Representatives of the Iowa Great Lakes Cleanwater Alliance say Tuesday evening’s incident in which a truck carrying fertilizer overturned near Superior had the potential to be a serious incident.
Steve Anderson, Coordinator of the Cleanwater Alliance, tells KUOO news there was a tile intake a short distance from where the truck overturned. Had the fertilizer leaked, Anderson says there’s a strong likelihood it would have gotten into the intake and polluted groundwater. Fearing there would be a leak, Anderson says crews built an emergency dike.
Anderson says the incident reinforces the need to have a local hazardous material response team as we may not be as lucky next time.
