(Spirit Lake)– Although the Iowa Department of Natural Resources requires them, many residents with docks in the Iowa Great Lakes Area aren’t posting their names and addresses on them. That has Phil Petersen of the Iowa Great Lakes Water Safety Council concerned. He tells KUOO news having that information posted at the end of your dock could mean the difference between life and death…especially if emergency personnel have to reach your place by water.
Petersen says a larger number of docks on Big Spirit Lake have names and addresses on them than those on the lower lakes. He estimates about 80 percent of the docks on Big Spirit Lake have the proper signage…while on the lower lakes it’s only about 40 percent.
The signs can be either homemade or purchased.
