(Sheldon)– There’s been another fish kill in northwest Iowa.
Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources says it happened Monday on the west branch of the Floyd River Monday. A pipe used to transfer nitrogen between a storage tank and rail car broke. An unknown amount of the fertilizer flowed into a containment area and eventually drained into a storm sewer that outlets in the river. Workers tried to plug the drain, but not before an undetermined amount of nitrogen had already gotten into the river.
It’s not certain yet exactly how many fish were killed…but officials say it will probably be in the hundreds. It’s also not certain how big of an area was affected.
