(Spirit Lake)– Spirit Lake’s newest police officer was officially sworn in Monday.
Carlos Ledesma, his fiance and two children, recently moved to Iowa from California. Ledesma says there were two things that brought them here. He says he wanted to raise his kids in a safe place like Iowa; and his fiance is originally from here.
Ledesma says he was very impressed by what he learned about the Spirit Lake Police Department when he was doing some research as he was thinking about applying to become an officer. He says he spent considerable time visiting with residents and business owners. And Chief Jon Martyr says he was very impressed that Ledesma took it upon himself to do that.
Martyr says Ledesma’s hispanic nationality also brings some diversity to the Spirit Lake P.D. and will be valuable when help is needed with spanish translation.
Ledesma is currently enrolled in the Criminal Justice Program at Iowa Lakes Community College.
He began his new job as Spirit Lake police officer Monday.
