New Scams Making The Rounds

November 22, 2014

(Emmetsburg)– Palo Alto county authorities are alerting the public to some new scams making the rounds.

Sheriff Russ Jergens says some people in the area have received calls from someone claiming to represent the Deputy Sheriff’s Association soliciting money for local sheriff’s offices. Jergens says his and other local offices aren’t benefitted by that.

Jergens says another scam has small businesses being targeted with long distance bills from out-of-state companies, hoping the businesses will unknowingly pay the bill.

Another scam encourages people to invest in secure money markets, but requires you give them your social security number for a free check of your credit history. Jergens says you should always be suspicious when asked to give out social security or account numbers.
