(Spirit Lake)– Lakes area contractors say a new policy at the Dickinson County Landfill means they may soon have to charge more for building projects.
Waste Management, Incorporated…the company that owns and operates the landfill east of Arnolds Park…has sent letters to local contractors informing them of a new requirement pertaining to demolition material.
Effective immediately, building demolition material that’s brought to the landfill must be certified that its’ been inspected and does not contain asbestos, or that the asbestos has been removed by a state approved abatement contractor.
Waste Management says no exceptions will be made to the rule.
Company officials say there have been several incidents recently in which building demolition material was dumped at the Dickinson County Landfill, and that they would get calls after-the-fact stating the material contained asbestos.
Many contractors say the added requirement will slow down projects and that they’ll probably have to pass on the cost of the inspections and removal to their customers.
