(Jackson, Mn.)– The Minnesota Department of Transportation is using new technology to keep a couple of Interstate 90 overpasses ice-free this winter.
The new “Freeze Free” automated de-icing system consists of sensors that allow D-O-T staff to remotely activate equipment to apply chemicals. D-O-T officials say the sensors monitor surface temperatures and conditions. When temperatures approach the freezing mark, nozzles along the bridge and guardrail spray de-icing chemicals.
The system has been installed on I-90 overpasses at Beaver Creek and Worthington.
MnDOT has also installed new automated gates on the Highway 71 entrance ramps onto I-90 at Jackson. The gates can be lowered from a remote location to prohibit access to the interstate during times of severe winter weather.
