(Grand Teton National Park, Wyo.)– A climbing accident at Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming has claimed the life of a Sanborn native.
Authorities say 21-year-old Brandon Oldenkamp was in one of three climbing groups above 13-thousand feet on the Grand Teton Mountain when a thunderstorm hit Wednesday. Oldenkamp was reported to have gone over a cliff during the storm and his party lost site of him.
16 climbers were rescued from the exposed mountainside late Wednesday. All suffered injuries from lightning, including burns and neurological effects.
Searchers found Oldenkamp’s body shortly before Noon Mountain Time Thursday.
Oldenkamp would have been a senior this fall at Dordt College in Sioux Center where he majored in accounting and was a member of the basketball program and a two-time Great Plains Athletic Conference honorable mention honoree.
Oldenkamp was a 2007 graduate of Western Christian High School in Hull.
