Motorists Reminded Of Schoolbus Stop Arm Law

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– With most northwest Iowa schools back in session, area law enforcement officers are reminding motorists it’s illegal to pass a stopped school bus that has it’s warning lights flashing and the stop arm extended.

Dickinson county Sheriff Greg Baloun tells KUOO news the number of violations his office sees increases each year. Last year alone he says deputies wrote about a dozen tickets for school bus stop violations. Baloun says the problem isn’t just in rural areas. Area police departments see quite a few school bus violations each year as well.

Violators face a 50-dollar fine.

School bus drivers take down license plate numbers of violators and report them to law enforcement agencies.
