Minor Fire Forces Evacuation Of Spencer Business/Apartment Building

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A Spencer office building and apartment complex had to be evacuated for a short time Wednesday after an electrical short started a small fire.

The Spencer Fire Department was called shortly after noon to 212 Grand Avenue Avenue on a report of sparks and smoke in a common area between Speed Printers and Midwest Health Foods.

Fire Chief Doug Duncan says the fire was located above the ceiling at the rear of the building. Both businesses and the apartments in the building were evacuated. The fire was extinguished and electrical power was shut off while firefighters removed ceiling tile and burning insulation.

Occupants were allowed back in the building around 2:30 p.m.

Minor damage was reported to the ceiling area, with some smoke damage to the rest of the building.
