(Spirit Lake)– Those working to raise funds to restore a historic shelter house on Big Spirit Lake say they were successful in garnering enough donations to meet matching requirements of a 120-thousand dollar donation. It means they are now 240-thousand dollars closer to their goal of raising a million dollars to renovate the Mini Wakan shelter house.
In addition to rebuilding and renovating the Mini Wakan shelter house, an endowment fund would also be established for future maintenance of that facility and the lodge at Gull Point State Park.
Project Chairman Joe Ulman says the Mini Wakan committee will soon be meeting with DNR architects to improve and finalize the design for the project, with a bid letting tentatively scheduled for this coming February.
Tax deductible contributions for the Mini Wakan and Gull Point shelters and endowment project may be sent to the Spirit Lake Protective Association, Mini Wakan Shelter, P.O. Box 95, Spirit Lake, Iowa…51360.
