(Spirit Lake)– While much of the world mourns the passing of Johnny Carson, most of us never got closer to the “King of Late Night” than our television sets. That wasn’t the case for one well-known singer from Des Moines. Marilyn Mae, a recording artist who’s well known for her performances in the lakes area, holds the record for the most guest appearances by a singer on the show–76. She first appeared on the show in 1965 after being discovered performing in a New York theatre by Ed McMahon.
Maye says being on the show gave her career an incredible boost.
Contrary to what many say, Maye doesn’t feel Carson was aloof. She says Carson was always very focused prior to each show, recalling how at ease he made her and other guests feel. Maye did many live concerts with Carson on the road where she said he was especially easy-going and friendly.
Maye says a combination of Carson’s clever personality and outstanding talent and delivery…along with some excellent writers…combined to make Carson such a huge success.
