Man Dies Of Injuries Sustained In A Pick-up/Wheelchair Collision

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– A Sioux Falls man seriously injured when a pickup collided with the wheelchair he was riding in last Friday in Spirit Lake has died of his injuries.

The victim is identified as 44-year-old Ronald Joseph Pilachowski of Sioux Falls.

Spirit Lake police say Pilachowski was crossing Highways nine and 71 when the electric wheelchair he was operating was struck by a westbound pickup driven by 26-year-old Heath Michael Willison of Milford. Pilachowski was transported by ambulance to Dickinson County Memorial Hospital with massive head injuries. He was transferred by life-flight helicopter to Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls where he passed away yesterday (Sunday).

An investigation continues. So far, no charges have been filed.

The mishap took place around 2:30 p.m. Friday.

It’s believed Pelachowski was in town for a fishing tournament for the Paralyzed Veterans of America.

The group was touring Pure Fishing at the time of Friday’s accident.
