Maintenance Building Site Again Discussed By Okoboji Council

November 22, 2014

(Okoboji)– Where to locate a new city maintenance building was once again a topic of discussion at Tuesday’s Okoboji city council meeting.

The city was orginally looking at putting it in Spier Park. They decided to look at other sites after hearing concerns from neighbors. One of the new sites is near McDonalds. The council learned Tuesday that soil borings at that potential site determined a large amount of fill would have to be replaced…adding about 60-thousand dollars onto the project. They decided that wouldn’t be feasible and directed city staff to explore other possible sites…including taking another look at Spier Park.

Other sites that will be explored include land owned by Mau Marine on Depot Street west of Tweeter’s; and on the south end of the airport. One possibility that will be explored with the airport option is to include a hangar and waiting area in the maintenance building, along with possibly a couple of bays for fire trucks that are also currently housed at the airport. It was pointed out that under that option, some negotiations would be needed with the city of Spirit Lake, which owns the airport.

A feasibility report on each option will be presented to the Okoboji city council at an upcoming meeting.
