(Spirit Lake)– If you have a mailbox that’s not attached to your house and didn’t get mail Monday, it’s because you didn’t leave the lid open.
Postal officials throughout Iowa, including those locally, are reminding people with boxes at streets and roads to keep the lids open. It’s being done as a precaution due to the recent mailbox bombings in eastern Iowa, western Illinois and Nebraska.
Spirit Lake Postmaster Kim Andrea says so far, most local patrons have been abiding by the new regulations. She says local mail carriers and patrons are being told to be on the lookout for anything suspicious and report it immediately.
Andrea said she has no idea how long the open lid policy will remain in place.
