Lodging Tax Being Proposed In Spencer

November 23, 2014

(Spencer)– The Spencer City Council is considering a recommendation from the city’s Progress and Development Committee to put a hotel-motel tax on the ballot with the November general election.

The committee is proposing a five percent tax with 500-thousand dollars going to the all-seasons event center proposed for the Clay County fairgrounds. Another 200-thousand would go to the indoor soccer facility. Committee members say the money would meet the local matches needed to secure grants for the projects.

City Administrator Dean Torresen estimates the tax would generate about 140-thousand dollars a year in revenue. That means the first five years of revenue would already be spoken for.

The city council reviewed the recommendation at their meeting last night. Formal action could be taken at the next meeting.
