Local Workforce Development Offices May Be Forced To Close

November 23, 2014

(Spencer)– A lack of funding means some Iowa Workforce Development field offices, including ones in Spencer and Estherville, may be forced to close their doors July 1st.

Deputy Director Jane Bartow says the agency faced a similar situation two years ago when the legislature waited until the closing days of the session to reauthorize a surcharge on businesses that kept the offices open. Bartow says the exact same scenario faces them now. She’s calling on state lawmakers to pass the funding mechanism.

Closure of the local offices would require local residents seeking Workforce Development services to travel to regional offices in Fort Dodge, Sioux City or Mason City.

Bartow says they’ll be putting up signs in the 54 rural and satellite offices that would be affected warning customers of the possibility of those offices closing.
