(Des Moines)– Roll up your sleeve if you’re a college-age student in Iowa who hasn’t been fully vaccinated for mumps.
In an effort to combat the worst outbreak in nearly 20 years, state health officials are holding vaccination clinics for adults 18-to-22 who have not received two doses of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella vaccine.
The number of cases in Iowa now stands at 975.
Director Mary Mincer Hansen of the Iowa Department of Public Health says they’ll divvy up doses among 35 counties with the highest populations of young adults and where colleges are located.
The new plan comes after the U-S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that 25-thousand doses of the M-M-R vaccine will be sent to Iowa. Another 25-thousand doses will be sent to other states.
Locally, Buena Vista, Emmet and O’Brien counties will get 400 doses each while Sioux county will receive 500.
The first clinic will be held next week, with another in May.
