Local Utilities Warn Of Potential For Freezing Water Service Lines

November 23, 2014

(Spencer)– Area utilities are warning people about the possibility of water lines freezing up and breaking.

Officials say a lack of snow and extremely cold temperatures earlier this winter allowed frost to penetrate the ground much deeper than usual. Curtis Dean of Spencer Municipal Utilities says it’s three and-a-half feet deep in some places. And he says that could be deep enough to cause some water service lines to freeze.

Dean recommends you check the temperature of the water by letting it run a few minutes. Then, hold a regular thermometer under the stream. Dean says if the water temperature is 40 degrees or under, your line could be susceptible to freezing. If that’s the case, he recommends opening a faucet just enough to allow a small stream to flow until things warm up.

Dean says it’s the property owner’s responsibility to repair lines that run between the curb and meter.
