Local Red Cross Director Retires

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– To some, she is known as the Red Cross lady; many call her a friend; some even call her Grandma; but everyone knows her as a true angel on earth.

A retirement open house was held Sunday for Ann Zahrt of Spencer, who has served as the Executive Director of the Iowa Great Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross the last 24 years. Over 300 people showed up to wish her well.

Zahrt says she’s very proud of the work she has done with the Red Cross, and of all the people she has worked with over the years. But she admits there are a few aspects of the job that won’t be hard to let go. She says it will definitely seem different not being on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Zahrt adds she will always be a part of the Red Cross. She also took time to thank the blood donors, who she calls the “un-sung heroes” of the American Red Cross.

Zahrt’s retirement will officially begin June 30th. The Red Cross Board of Directors have yet to name a successor.
