(Des Moines)– Drainage projects in two northwest Iowa counties will benefit from a one million dollar grant awarded to Iowa agriculture officials to help clean up drinking water.
The five-year project will consist of the installation of a gate-like system at farms in three pilot projects in Palo Alto and Pocahontas counties. The systems will prevent nitrates in the soil from running into streams and creeks.
Excess nitrates in run-off have been blamed for polluting drinking water sources and causing other ecological in major waterways such as the Mississippi River.
