Local Lakes, Rivers & Streams Show Up On “Impaired Waterways” List

November 22, 2014

(Des Moines)– Several local bodies of water show up on the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ latest list of impaired waterways.

The D-N-R issued it’s annual list earlier this week. Local waterways that appear on it include Tuttle Lake, Storm Lake, Ingham Lake, Lost Island Lake, Trumbull Lake and Little Spirit Lake.

Portions of the Little Sioux River, the West Fork of the Little Sioux and Milford Creek also made the list.

Most of the local waterways were sited for algae and turbidity problems.

Lower Gar Lake has appeared on the list in previous years. It wasn’t included on this year’s list because the D-N-R has established a plan of action to try to clean it up.

Even though that’s the case, Susan Heathcote of the Iowa Environmental Council feels it should still be on the list.

Heathcote says actually cleaning up the impaired waters will be up to local residents…not the D-N-R.
