Line Item Veto Lawsuit Delays Spirit Lake School Projects

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Spirit Lake school board is putting on hold plans for atleast one more gymnasium at the high school and a new auditorium.

Superintendent Tim Grieves tells KUOO news it’s the result of a lawsuit Republican lawmakers have filed over Governor Vilsack’s line item vetos in a bill that established the Iowa Values Fund.

One of the core elements in the bill would allow school districts to borrow against their extended local option sales tax revenues. Grieves says no other planning will be done on the projects until they know the outcome of the lawsuit.

Grieves informed school board members of the development at their meeting Monday evening.

Meanwhile, a bidletting has been scheduled for another construction project that remains on schedule. The board set August 4th as the date for a public hearing on the middle school addition.

Board members also met with city representatives regarding the south Hill Avenue improvement project from 19th street to the south city limits. Grieves says preliminary plans include provisions for safe crossing areas and diagonal parking in front of the schools.
