Lightning Hits Okoboji Residence; Close Call For Grimes Family

November 23, 2014

(Okoboji)– A house in Okoboji was struck by lightning early this (Fri.) morning as the occupants watched from the front door.

Arnolds Park/Okoboji Fire Chief Steve Dulin says the Dennis Graham family from Grimes was in the family cabin on Lake Shore Drive watching the storm move through when lightning struck the corner of the house around 1:00 a.m. An outdoor light above their head was shattered and the large jolt of static electricity knocked the individuals backward into the kitchen.

Dulin says there was minor damage to the house–mainly the electrical system. Firefighters checked the attic for any signs of fire, but couldn’t find any.

The house is located at 1602 Lake Shore Drive in Okoboji and is owned by Dennis Graham of Iowa Falls.

Chief Dulin reminds everyone not to stand in a doorway or near windows when a thunderstorm is going on.
