Liability Fines

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Failure to prove you have liability insurance if you’re pulled over by a police officer or get into an accident means you’d better be prepared to pay. It’s a state law that’s been on the books awhile already.

The Spirit Lake City Council Tuesday revised its code of ordinances to make it possible for the city to collect the fines on such infractions. Currently, they go to the state.

Police Chief Dan Thomsen says the city stands to collect some big money from the change. Failure to provide proof of insurance if you’re pulled over on a routine traffic violation means a fine of 250-dollars. It’s 500-dollars if you’re involved in an accident.
