Leaf Fires

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Area fire departments are again reminding anyone burning leaves to use extreme caution.

Several Dickinson county fire departments have battled leaf fires the past several days that got out of control due to wind and extremely dry conditions.

Such a fire Monday evening in the Pioneer Beach area on East Lake Okoboji threatened a couple of homes.

Spirit Lake Fire Chief Wally Jorgenson says firefighters were called to a residence at 456 252nd Avenue shortly after 5:30 p.m. Jorgenson says a leaf fire got out of control and quickly spread to two neighboring homes…starting their decks on fire. Jorgenson says firefighters were able to quickly extinguish them and damage was very minimal.

Spirit Lake firefighters were at the scene about an hour.
