(Wahpeton)– Officials with Lakeside Lab want to construct weather stations near the wind turbines south of the schools in Spirit Lake and at the lab on West Lake Okoboji in Wahpeton.
Dr. Arnold VanderValk, a professor at Iowa State University and the Director of Lakeside Lab, says the stations would play a crucial role in monitoring water quality of the Iowa Great Lakes. He says the wind plays a direct role in depositing nutrients into the lakes, and that as of right now, there’s no station in the Iowa Great Lakes that monitors wind conditions on a regular basis.
VanderValk says Lakeside Lab has applied for a 12-thousand dollar grant through the Dickinson County Water Quality Commission to cover the cost of the project. He says if they’re successful in landing the grant they hope to have the stations up and running next summer.
